Match Day 2012
The excitement never gets old from year to year as fourth-year medical students at Meharry Medical College will discover where they will begin their medical careers on Friday, March 20, 2015.
Match Day, a highly competitive process, is the annual event where medical schools across the nation announce where students will complete their residencies. It occurs on the third Friday in March each year at the 155 medical schools in the United States.
Senior medical students usually begin the application process at the beginning of their fourth and final year in medical school. After they apply to residency programs, they are invited for interviews held between October and February.
After the interview period is over, students submit a "rank-order list" to a centralized matching service, the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Residency programs also submit a list of their preferred applicants in rank order to this same service. The two parties' lists are combined by an NRMP computer, which creates stable matches of residents to programs using an algorithm. The process is "blinded" so neither applicant nor residency program will see each other's list.
This Friday, seniors from the SOM will finally realize their dream of becoming a physician is really coming to completion with their families, classmates, professors and mentors watching!
