an act of duty and gratitude.
For Jimmy Sheats, D.D.S. '74, giving back to Meharry is an act of duty and gratitude.
Sheats said that when he entered Meharry in 1970, "the first thing that dawned on me...was a sense of family." His relationship with the college, however, goes beyond student and alma mater, having taught at Meharry for eleven years and leaving as an associate professor and chairman of the department of endodontics.
Sheats is also a member of The Guardians of Our Legacy—Meharry alumni who've given over $100,000 in support of the institution.
"Meharry has enabled me to actually provide for my family and educate my children," Sheats said. "I support Meharry because without Meharry I would not be who I am today.
"It's almost a Sheats motto: If all you can do is help those closest to you, you really haven't done enough," Sheats said. "The more we give, the more we receive, and it's just something that happens over and over and over again... It's just the spirit of giving, and the gift of giving"
