Barbara J. Johnson Named New Senior Vice President for Operations, Academic Support, Technology, and Planning

Nashville, Tenn. – (August 14, 2012) –Wayne J. Riley, M.D., MPH, MBA, MACP, President and Chief Executive Officer of Meharry Medical College, is pleased to announce the appointment of Barbara J. Johnson, MBA, Ph.D., as the College's Senior Vice President for Operations, Academic Support, Technology and Planning. Dr. Johnson currently serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Counseling, Adult and Higher Education at Northern Illinois University. She begins her new appointment at Meharry on September 17th.

Dr. Johnson has extensive experience in higher education as both an administrator and faculty member. Her professional experience includes student affairs administration, community college and adult education, marketing research and consultation in both higher education and corporate environments at Wake Forest University Medical School, Vanderbilt University and CB&A Market Research Group. She has held faculty positions at the University of New Orleans, Jackson State University and Volunteer State Community College.

Dr. Johnson's research and teaching interests include student affairs administration, and the recruitment, development, retention and experiences of students and faculty in a variety of post-secondary institutions, specifically Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals as well as authored and co-authored book chapters and has delivered numerous professional and scholarly presentations.

Dr. Johnson is currently the Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of the Professoriate. Her other professional and scholarly service activities include serving as Director, Leadership and Mentoring Institute and on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education (AABHE). Most recently she served on the Editorial Review Board of Higher Education in Review.

At Meharry Dr. Johnson will partner with President Riley in moving the college forward. She will oversee the Division of Operations, Academic Support, Technology and Planning (ASTOP) and work collaboratively with the Deans, Corporate Officers, and Faculty. She will oversee the College's Human Resources, Information Technology, Title III, Campus Operations, Enrollment Management, Student Admissions and all aspects of student-centered support services and activities, including the Meharry Medical College Library. In her role she will also serve as liaison to the Faculty Senate and she will also provide direct leadership in implementing Meharry's strategic planning process.

Dr. Johnson received the B.S. Magna Cum Laude in accounting from Winston-Salem State University, the M.B.A. with honors and a marketing focus from The Ohio State University School of Business, and the Ph.D. in Education and Human Development with an emphasis in Higher Education from Vanderbilt University's Peabody College of Education and Human Development.
