The Search for the 12th President of
Meharry Medical College

Meharry Medical College is a national treasure – founded in 1876, just after the end of the civil war, to teach former slaves how to deliver health care services to their communities.  Now, nearly 140 years later, Meharry Medical College is dedicated to meeting the health care needs of the poor and underserved regardless of race, ethnicity, creed or means.

We uphold this mission by training physicians, dentists, biomedical scientists, health administrators and policy makers.  We conduct research to eliminate health disparities in cancer biology, women’s health and HIV/AIDS.  Each year, we provide millions of dollars worth of uncompensated care to those most in need.

The next president of this historic institution will soon discover that Meharry’s impact extends beyond the borders of its Nashville address.  Most notably, 83 percent of our alumni return to practice in underserved rural and urban communities throughout the country.  Meharry alumni physicians are 20 percent more likely to practice in primary care than other U.S. physicians.  Sixteen percent of all African-American dentists have graduated from Meharry's School of Dentistry.  Meharry is a leading producer of African-American Ph.D.s in biomedical science.

As we embark on the search for our next leader, we are fortunate to have at the helm our current president, A. Cherrie Epps, Ph.D.  Her administration is dedicated to ensuring the sustainability of Meharry Medical College.  Today, the College trains a diverse student body that is predominantly African American, but also represents Caucasian, Asian and Hispanic populations.  Our faculty are equally diverse and dedicated to our mission as many have served more than 20 years.  Many faculty members are also alumni.

The campus is alive and vibrant with two new buildings designed to enhance the student experience.  Brand new on campus apartments – Morena Place – come equipped with free WiFi and washer and dryer units.  The Cal Turner Family Center for Student Education houses all student services in one central location on campus and includes a dining facility as well as meeting rooms and study nooks.
