Chairman, Board of Trustees

Dear Meharrians,

Last year, Meharry Medical College launched a national search for the next President of our historic institution. The Board of Trustees appointed an 11-member Presidential Search Committee with representation from alumni, students, the community and members of the Board of Trustees. Under the leadership of Mr. Jim Williams as Chair, the committee worked closely with the global executive search firm, Spencer Stuart, to conduct a national search for qualified executives in academic medicine. The search produced an impressive pool of interested, qualified and highly motivated candidates from which the committee selected three for consideration. After a comprehensive evaluation and intensive interview process, the Presidential Search Committee presented the single-most outstanding candidate to the Board of Trustees and received a unanimous vote of approval.

I am pleased to inform you that the Presidential Search Committee has successfully completed its charge and has identified the next President of Meharry Medical College.

The 12th President of Meharry Medical College will be named and introduced in person to students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and friends on Friday, March 6, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. in the Cal Turner Family Center for Student Education.

I want to express my appreciation to the committee for their time, energy and dedication to this process. I believe they have done an excellent job in helping to ensure our continued success. I also want to offer my personal gratitude to our current President and Chief Executive Officer, A. Cherrie Epps, Ph.D., who agreed to lead our institution at a time when Meharry needed her acumen, knowledge and wisdom. Dr. Epps will continue in this role until June 30, 2015.

Meharry Medical College is a revered institution with an enduring legacy of upholding our mission. We do this by educating and training physicians, dentists, biomedical scientists, health administrators and policy makers who then go into the world to serve. We conduct research to eliminate health disparities; and each year we provide millions of dollars of uncompensated healthcare to those most in need.

I am confident that our new President will set a vision that positions Meharry for continued success, honoring the foundation on which we stand tall.

Sincerely,

Frank S. Royal Sr., M.D. ’68

Chairman, Board of Trustees
