LCME Accreditation

Message from the Dean

The School of Medicine of Meharry Medical College will undergo a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation site visit in 2013-2014. In preparation, we have begun the LCME preparation with the establishment of the LCME school-wide self study task force and subcommittees including the appointment of a Curriculum Review and Update Committee. This preparation process will take us more than 18 months, including the completion of a detailed Institutional Self-Study.

Accreditation is an essential and critical process for the School of Medicine. Please take time to review the materials on this website and on Share Point site.

Thank you for assisting with this important process.

Charles P. Mouton, MD, MS
Dean and Senior Vice President for Health Affairs, School of Medicine

Overview

In 2013-2014, Meharry Medical College School of Medicine MD-degree program will undergo an on-site accreditation review conducted by representatives of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). This two and a half day review process occurs once every eight years. Our preparation for this site visit has begun.

Important reasons why accreditation by the LCME is important:
  1. It certifies that schools of medicine are in compliance with and meet national standards for structure and function as an educational program leading to the MD;
  2. Federal agencies require that medical schools to be certified to receive federal grants for medical education and for students to participate in federal loan programs;
  3. It ensures and certifies that students and graduates of LCME-accredited medical schools are eligible to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE);
  4. It also ensure that graduates of medical schools have eligibility to enter residencies approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME); and
  5. Certification of US medical schools by LCME is a prerequisite for medical licensure in a large number of states. The aim of this web site and the link to the SharePoint LCME site is to keep our academic community informed about the LCME review process, preparation, to reduce the use of paper.

The site is organized in a user friendly manner to encourage easy access to initial information. The website is also linked to a SharePoint LCME site where documents can be accessed by committee members.

As we work through the process, additional information will be uploaded to the site. Please check the website often for updates and further details.
