| Meharry Medical College moved into the age of computing in 1968 with the purchase of a Scientific Data Systems (SDS) Sigma 7 mainframe. The original purchase was funded by a grant and was intended to support a Multitest Screening Laboratory -- a sort of assembly line for physical examinations. Test results were entered by hand on special "mark sense" tab cards that were then read into the system by optical mark card readers. The Sigma 7 was first installed in a temporary location at Fisk University, across the street from Meharry. When Meharry's purpose-built Computer Center was completed in 1970, the system was reinstalled there.
In 1970, it became clear that the Sigma 7 had more power than was being utilized, so other applications were brought on line. A payroll system was written, and applications that supported fund raising and research efforts were added. In 1971, a Burroughs B3500 mainframe was installed to take on payroll and accounting applications and the Sigma 7 was dedicated to development, research, and computer-aided-instruction efforts. The administrative system was upgraded to a Burroughs B2900 in 1982 and then to a B2930 in 1985. The Sigma and Burroughs systems remained in service until 1988.
In 1987, Meharry installed a Digital VAX 8600, which was subsequently upgraded several times to the current VAX 6610. This is the main system for administrative computing at Meharry.
SCT Corporation provides the FRS, HRS, ADS, and SIS administrative packages used at Meharry.
George Braun established Meharry Computer Center in 1968 and remained as Director until 1982. Stephen O. Brumbelow was Director from 1982 until 1994. Marsha D. Williams was Director of Management Information Systems from 1994 until 1998. Victoria Mosley was Associate Vice President for Information Technology from 1998 until 2002, when Jim Powlus became department head.
