Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The Advanced Education Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, School of Dentistry, Meharry Medical College is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. 

The program requires 48 months of full-time study. The Advanced Specialty Program is sponsored by the School of Dentistry, which is properly chartered and licensed to operate and offer instructions that lead to the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. The School of Dentistry is a member of the American Association of Dental Schools and is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.  It is registered by the Dental Examining Boards in each state.

The training hospital is the Metropolitan Nashville General Hospital, which is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.  The Advanced Specialty Program is affiliated with other institutions, but the School of Dentistry accepts full responsibilities for the quality of education provided at the affiliated institutions:

The Nashville Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee,  which  sponsors its own Oral and Maxillofacial  Surgery Program.

The University Of Tennessee Graduate School Of Medicine at Knoxville, Tennessee, which sponsors its own accredited Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program.




ELIGIBILITY FOR SELECTION

The Commission on Dental Accreditation has granted the accreditation status of approval for this program with the stipulation that enrollment be limited to one (1) resident in each year of the program.  Dentists who meet the following criteria are eligible for admission to this program upon submission of the information listed to the Selection Committee (Admissions Committee):

  • Degree from an institution in the United States or Canada accredited by the respective Commission on Dental Accreditation
  • Official dental school transcript.
  • Copy of Part II of the National Board of Dental Examiners score
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation (one letter from the Dean of Dental School).
  • The completed Program Application Form.
  • Appearance for personal interview
  • A state Dental License or certifications by a Regional Licensure Board is required prior to the third year.



PROGRAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES


GOALS

Consistent with the mission of the college, the School, and the hospital, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program exists to provide excellent education and training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with a special focus on providing opportunities to promising African-American and other underrepresented ethnic minority students.  The educational endeavor is achieved through completion of the structured didactic courses, seminars, conferences, and rotations through other services.  This will permit these individuals to attain the knowledge and skills required to practice the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, to teach, to advance the profession, and to engage in other forms of intellectual pursuits.

OBJECTIVES

The Educational Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is designed to:

  • Provide the availability of quality specialty care in the area of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to communities traditionally denied these services for socio-economic and educational reasons.
  • Serve as a regional and national resource for training African-Americans and other underrepresented ethnic minority students as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
  • Prepare students to function effectively as an integral member and leader of the healthcare team while performing quality oral and maxillofacial care. 
  • Inculcate a sense of inquiry and develop a scientific mind that would allow orderly progression and promote intellectual pursuit in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with special attention to diseases and conditions that disproportionately affect ethnic and other minority populations.
  • Develop and augment the skills of the OMS residents through planned didactic courses, clinical outpatient and inpatient training, and to produce oral and maxillofacial surgeons who demonstrate empathy toward their patients while providing quality oral and maxillofacial surgical care. 
  • Produce future leaders, clinicians and teachers of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery who will serve as leaders in dental education, organized dentistry, and the community at large.

 

BASIC SCIENCE AND CLINICAL TRAINING


Basic Science Education in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is provided by instructors through the completion of structured didactic courses, seminars/conferences, or problem solving clinically oriented laboratories.  Program specific courses are integrated into clinical training to include Surgical Anatomy, Physiology, Clinical Pharmacology, Clinical Microbiology, and Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

Clinical training and education requires a demonstration of competency in the coursework in physical diagnosis, clinical medicine and pathophysiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery didactic lectures, seminars/conferences, and off-service assignments to Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, General Surgery to include subspecialty surgery, and thirty months on clinical Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.  This will permit the residents to practice the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery on an outpatient and on an ambulatory and inpatient basis, to teach, to advance the profession and to engage in other forms of pursuit.
