The Department of Pediatric Dentistry strives to teach a high level of pediatric dental diagnosis, treatment and oral health maintenance while focusing on factors that impact growth, development and a healthy status of the oral and facial structures.
The psychological self image of the child (and young adult), as well as social, community, nutritional and other causal factors affecting child health and development are also crucially important aspects of the teaching program.
The mission of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry is to support the goals and interests of Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry and to serve as the primary educational, service and administrative component of the college which is directly responsible for the advocacy and promotion of the art and science of dentistry for children.
The department has established educational and service policies that insure the highest standards of care for patients and the highest level of educational opportunity for students of the dental sciences. It will continually promote activities which are beneficial to the community at large. The department strives to provide its services with maximum skill and compassion and it is committed to demonstrate sensitivity to the special needs and concerns of the underserved and culturally and/or economically disadvantaged.
The Division of Pediatric Dentistry is committed to continue its illustrious heritage as a recognized national resource to provide comprehensive programs in dental education, dental service and research which address health care issues that disproportionately affect socially and economically disadvantage groups.
The division is a small and assertive academic unit comprised of one full time pediatric dentist, a part time pediatric dentist and a general dentist with special emphasis in pediatric dentistry.
