About Us
Mission
The mission of the Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) Program at Meharry Medical College is to improve the health of minorities and members of underserved communities through instruction, research, and service.
Instructional Goal
To provide quality instruction in public health.
Instructional Objectives: The following instructional objectives are expected to be achieved by 2013:
a. To identify an area of public health specialization;
b. To increase to five (5) the number of full-time faculty;
c. To secure dedicated space consistent with the program’s anticipated expansion;
d. To continue to provide a curriculum that is consistent with institutional and program missions;
e. To maintain an ongoing curriculum that is consistent with developments in public health; and
f. To provide an instructional curriculum that will improve yearly acceptance of 25% of students who
apply to a doctoral degree program in Public Health.
Research Goal
To contribute to the discovery and application of knowledge in public health.
Research Objectives: The following research objectives are expected to be achieved
by 2013:a.. To hire two (2) new faculty with demonstrable expertise in public health research;
b. To provide protected time to all program faculty engaged in funded research
c. To increase external funding for faculty research by 50%, inclusive of students’ collaboration with
Community Based Organizations and other institutions in Tennessee.
d. To develop at least two (2) new collaborative research initiatives with public health research
intensive institutions;
e. To provide research training opportunities to all students; and
f. To increase by 50% research based manuscripts submitted and published in peer reviewed journals.
Service Goals
To provide public health leadership and service in the community.
Service Objectives: The following service objectives are expected to be achieved by 2013:
a. All students will participate in a public health related externship at the end of the first year of
matriculation; and
b. The program will establish partnerships with at least two (2) additional public health service
institutions that meet the program requirements for externship.
Students in the MSPH. program receive a foundation in the basics of public health that allow them to work as health professionals in the public, private and voluntary health agency sectors at the local, state, federal and international levels.
