Graduate Program in Cancer Biology
Faculty mentors in the Cancer Biology emphasis area, study the molecular bases of cancer initiation, progression, and metastasis using both in vitro and in vivo model systems. Translation research (i.e. from the bench to the bedside) is highly emphasized. Tumor sites which disproportionately affect African Americans such as breast, prostate, lung, colon and ovarian cancer are of particular interest. Faculty focus on endogenous mediators of the balance between proliferation and programmed cell death (apoptosis) as well as exogenous provocateurs of disease, such as toxic agents in the environment. Studies span the molecular to the in vivo, and from model systems to human disease.
