Meharry Medical College has consistently maintained a core group of African-American underrepresented minority faculty by offering faculty development and professional leave enhancements. The faculty development enhancements include:
- The development of a structured mentoring program for all junior faculty and the Joy McCann Mentoring Program for women faculty in medicine
- Paid professional leave to complete master level programs in public health and health service and bench research at the National Institutes of Health, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville
- Financial support to attend workshops, seminars, and courses in professional development focusing on leadership, administration, evaluation, and cultural competency
- Workshops, seminars, and individualized sessions on grant writing, publications, editing, and strategies and techniques for handling stress, time management, pedagogical improvement skills such as public speaking, use of power point software, informatics and computerization, culteral competency, community service, ant teaching.
