Internal Medicine is one of the most exciting, rewarding and prestigious specialties of medicine. Not only is it the cornerstone of tertiary medical care, it is a major provider of primary care training. Physicians who choose this discipline find the physical and mental challenges stimulating.
The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Meharry Medical College is a fully accredited three-year categorical program. Residents, throughout their training, actively participate in a well-rounded core curriculum in general internal medicine and the medical sub-specialties. Training includes in-patient care with experiences in the intensive care units and in the emergency medicine service. An excellent balance of ambulatory care provision and training is facilitated under the direction of supervisory faculty at affiliate institutions. Residents assume responsibility for inpatient and ambulatory care of patients under their supervision. Residents receive additional training in ethics, cost effectiveness of care, medical informatics, managed care theory as well as pathophysiology of major diseases.
Residents are an important component of the health care team and academic environment. As such, they participate in the instruction of those trainees junior to them and in the instruction of medical students.
Post graduate training is conducted in two main affiliate sites:
Nashville General
Hospital, located on the campus of
Meharry
Medical
College and the Department of Veterans Affairs' TN Valley Health Care System, Alvin C. York Campus in
Murfreesboro,
TN, 26 miles southwest of
Nashville. In addition to these sites, geriatrics training takes place at the Bordeaux Long Term Care facility located a few miles from the campus. This facility with a diverse in-patient population provides excellent geriatric training experiences. Opportunities for research and scholarly activities are offered to residents under the supervision of subspecialty and school-wide faculty mentorship and sponsorship.
