September 27-28, 2007
Nashville Marriott at Vanderbilt, West End
Nashville, TN
In conducting biomedical and behavioral research today, the demands of ethical, regulatory and scientific environments may stretch the expertise and tolerance of researchers, ethics review boards, and participants themselves. This may be especially challenging for research involving highly stigmatized populations such as substance abusers and persons with HIV. The goal of this conference is to confront ethical barriers and myths complicating such research and to provide a venue for discussion of unsolved issues among colleagues and community. Case studies, panels, audience feedback and discussions will be integrated throughout the program.
Session Topics:
- Elephants in the Room: Ethics in HIV/AIDS and Substance Abuse Research
- Incentives for Research Participation
- IRB Mission Creep
- The Long Shadow of Stanley Milgram: Obedience and Deception in Research
- Evidence-based Research Ethics: Finding and Using Data to Solve Ethical Problems
- Attitudes about HIV/AIDS: Variations in Ethical Beliefs and Practices
- Research Outcomes for the Real World
