Clinical and Research Ethics
Course Description
Description
The focus of this course is applied ethics in clinical and research environments. Course activities include both seminar instruction and clinical experience. Through active engagement with ethical issues in seminars, readings and clinical settings, students will develop comprehension, applied problem-solving skills and leadership skills in clinical and research ethics, as well as enhancing their ethical sensitivity to clinical encounters of all kinds.
Seminar Component
Students will meet 3 days each week for seminar discussions based on their clinical experiences and scholarly readings in clinical and research ethics. Each day's seminar will include three parts:
- topical lecture and discussion
- case presentation by a student
- invited expert speaker(s)
Clinical Component
Students will spend 2 days each week engaging in clinical and research settings under the direction of a Preceptor(s). In the course of clinical activities, preceptors will discuss the ethical dimensions of clinical practices with students and offer exposure and readings for students to experience the realities of clinical and research ethics.
In addition, students will participate in ethics rounds at the bedside, observe an IRB meeting and attend an Ethics Committee meeting. See selected Student Comments and observations from Clinical sites.
Students will also be responsible for developing an ethics case presentation to present to the class.
