Student Comments

Selected Student Comments and Observations from various Clinical Sites

List the first 5 comments with bullets just as they are, then bring the bold-faced site name out to the left margin and list as follows:

Organ transplantation site

  • "A great experience.  The setup of going to the transplant committee first and then talking to pre/post transplant patients afterwards was a good reinforcement."

  • "This was my first experience in a transplant site.  There were very interesting ethical questions involving the effect of patient's social life on his/her chances of transplant."

  • "Very rewarding experience, learned much, would recommend."

Social services

  • "I think doctors have much to learn about the social context of medical care especially involving underprivileged patients."

NICU

  • "Are we emphasizing the health aspect of the baby too much over the social care of the baby?"

  • "Who and what warrants CPS referral?"

  • "Parents should have full power concerning measures taken to save a premie (yes or no)?"

  • "Dealing with parents who are drug users, mentally ill or potentially violent - and the question:  what are their parental rights?"

 Research

  • "Informed consent is clean cut on paper but the actual application in the clinical setting is not."

Hospice

  • "Patient who didn't want to see his daughter has now had a turn for the worse and now the daughter wants to visit her father who is no longer cognitive and oriented.  Should we still respect the wishes of the father?"

  • "A terminally ill baby with a genetic disorder cannot take food.  (The doctor) decided not to force feed baby.  The parents disagree and want hospice to try feeding . . . a compromise was reached."

Geriatrics

  • ". . . procedures to follow when a colleague has been negligent."

General

  • "This course should be a core requirement."

  • (The course binder) "has everything we will ever need to know."

  • (The course will) "help me during exams, licensing and general professional knowledge."

  • (I am) "considering to study medical ethics further."

  • "I was able to make a lot or good connections."
