The Family Medicine Residency Training Program of Meharry Medical College and Nashville General Hospital is fully accredited and provides residents with an opportunity to learn and grow as individuals and community leaders. Regular community outreach and service opportunities support the development of strong community medicine practitioners. Our program provides a solid foundation in the principles of Family Medicine that will prepare each resident to take on the challenges of the varied roles available to today's family physician.

Mission

Family Medicine was founded on the belief that all people should have access to physicians trained to diagnose and manage the wide variety of medical care problems found in primary care settings. We believe that "health" is a state of holistic well being and our team is dedicated to helping individuals, families, and communities reach a state of health through our efforts in providing patient care services, education, and research. To this end, our goals are to:
· Train family physicians to respond competently to the needs of their patients and families
· Develop qualified community and national leaders
· Provide services to all communities with special attention to the poor and underserved

Vision

Residents serve their own panel of patients in several Family Medicine Centers and during various rotations in the Nashville General Hospital, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Veterans Affairs Clinics, and other affiliates, under the supervision of family medicine physicians and specialists. Training in the Patient Centered Medical Home model supports the development of resident’s skills in cutting edge practice guidelines and prepares them for careers on the forefront of Family and Community Medicine wherever they choose to practice in the future.  Meharry also offers a unique opportunity for residents to gain experience and create an impact while treating several types of populations, including designated underserved and vulnerable patients.  The rotation curriculum illustrates the range of learning experiences available to every resident.

Benefits

The Meharry Family Medicine Residency is proud to be able to offer a dynamic training experience that allows resident physicians to work with highly diverse populations and equally diverse colleagues.  The primary benefit of training with a diverse patient mix and a range of practice environments is the versatility of the graduate practice spectrum.  Likewise, the benefits of an “opposed” program include excellent consulting and teaching from  a broad talent pool of specialists  and generalists alike. Complimentary programming overlaps with the curricula of the Preventive Medicine Residency, Occupational Medicine Residency, and the Sports Medicine Fellowship.
