Family and Community Medicine

Academics

The Family Medicine Residency, Preventive Medicine Residency, and Occupational Medicine Residency Training Programs of Meharry Medical College and Nashville General Hospital are fully accredited and provide residents with opportunities to learn and grow as individuals and community leaders. Our programs provide a solid foundation in the principles of Family Medicine that will prepare each resident to take on the challenges available to today's family physician. Family Medicine was founded on the belief that all people should have access to physicians trained to diagnose and manage the wide variety of medical needs found in primary care settings. We believe that "health" is a state of well being in a number of areas including: psychological, occupational/environmental, physical, financial, and spiritual. Our team is dedicated to helping individuals, families, and communities reach their state of health through our efforts in providing patient care services, education and research.

Residents care for their own panel of patients in several Family Medicine Centers and during various rotations in the hospital under the supervision of family medicine physicians and other specialists. Each residency program offers essential opportunities to train and work in the Patient Centered Medical Home model of care; to learn from leaders in each sub-specialty through cooperative rotations with Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Tennessee Valley Veterans Affairs, and others; and to serve a community as diverse and culturally rich as the academic teams themselves.

Similarly, our Sports Medicine Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for specialized training and exciting clinical environments.

Pre-doctoral Clerkships in each year of the Medical Doctorate program provide hands-on clinical experiences that are a valuable introduction to practice based learning.
