The Department of Medicine at Meharry Meharry Medical College is a closely knit, finely tuned, cooperative organization of academically oriented faculty members and supporting personnel, selected to foster teaching, research and patient care excellence at Meharry Medical College and in the larger community which it serves. This is a three-year training program whcih consistes of 36 houseofficers and 2 chief residents .

Our residents have a significant role in shaping the curriculum. Monthly Resident Feedback Sessions allow us to ensure that we are meeting the educational needs of our house staff. Our residents have also been invited to completely review our Core Curriculum. This Core Curriculum, combined with Board Review lectures, ensures that our residents obtain a thorough knowledge of internal medicine principles.

Internal Medicine MGNHTwo hospitals serve as the principal education centers for both inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences; the Metropolitan Nashville General Hospital (MNGH, an urban charity facility) and the Department of Veteran Administration Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, Alvin C. York Campus (VA). The residents spend approximately 7 months at MNGH and 5 months at the VA. Both facilities offer training by board certified internists and specialists. General medical floor and intensive care unit (medical and cardiac) experiences are available at both hospitals. There are also training opportunities in psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine, geriatric medicine, otolaryngology, gynecology, neurology and outpatient psychiatry. A third facility, Metropolitan Bordeaux Hospital, is a long-term care hospital offering a thorough introduction into geriatric medicine .

The program in internal medicine is closely associated with the Meharry Medical College School of Medicine .  Our senior residents are expected to supervise and teach third and fourth year medical students during their internal medicine rotations. The school's resources, such as an extensive digital medical library and computer system, are available to all of ourresidents.

The Department of Internal Medicine has strengthened its commitment to performing high quality research (with an emphasis on improving the care of minority patients). It is our goal to encourage all of our residents and students to participate in scholarly activities related to ongoing clinical trials. This renewed focus on research should allow us to cultivate among our residents an interest in careers in academia.

Meharry Medical College has entered into an Alliance with our neighbor, Vanderbilt University , Vanderbilt allowing us to  enhance the academic and research opportunities of our faculty and residents. A result of this partnership is the creation of fellowships in Cardiology, and Hematology/Oncology.

The presence of fellows should improve the hands-on learning experience of our residents. The fellows will also serve as mentors and provide a vehicle for residents interested in choosing an academic career as a way to improve the care of indigent and minority patients.

Meharry Medical College's program in Internal Medicine offers a nurturing setting for our residents to be exposed to a broad range of patients at all stages of their illness (acute to chronic, ambulatory to nursing home), while participating in a stimulating academic environment.
