Dr. W.F. Bernell James, Professor Emeritus, served as a physician in the department of obstetrics and gynecology for over 30 years. He joined the department in 1941 after receiving his medical degree from Meharry in 1937 and completing his internship and residency at Hubbard Hospital.
Dr. James was dedicated to building the department and succeeded in his major objective of bringing the program up to the standard of other leading medical centers. In 1952, Dr. James became Professor and Department Chairman, a position he held until his retirement in 1973. As well, he served as Grand Marshall at Meharry for 22 years.
Dr. James was the first Meharry graduate to become a Diplomate and was the first physician to represent Meharry at the annual meetings of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists. The symposium, named after Dr. James, will highlight topics in general obstetrics and gynecology and specialty services from the perspective of new developments, cost, risks and quality of care for the female patient.

He completed his internship and residency requirements at George W. Hubbard Hospital.
