The Division of Nephrology is committed to provide the highest quality of patient care on kidney disease. Patients who have been diagnosed with kidney disease are referred to the Robert E. Hardy Renal Clinic located on the second floor of the Nashville General Hospital at Meharry adjacent to Meharry Medical College. The Hardy Clinic also offers hospital consultation and inpatient dialysis services. Outpatient dialysis is provided at the Meharry-Dialysis Clinic, Inc. facility located at 935 21st Avenue North.  Both inpatient and outpatient clinics are on the Meharry campus.

The Nephrology Division is dedicated to conduct the highest quality of clinical research in the area of kidney diseases, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. The Division is a pioneer in investigating the role of hypertension and renal disease as the leading cause of dialysis among African Americans. Currently the Division has been involved in two research projects:

  • Being the primary enroller in NIH sponsored clinical study entitled "African Americans Study of Kidney Disease and Hypertension ( AASK)".
  • The Study of Heart and Renal Protection (SHARP), an international study funded by the University of Oxford. The aim is designed to determine the relationship between lipids and renal failure.

The Division of Nephrology is also devoted to teach and train medical students and residents on the physiology and pathology of the kidney diseases and disease diagnoses. The Division incorporates the teaching strategy of evidenced-based medicine in its practice management of renal disease.
