Message from the Chair

Gloria Richard-Davis, M.D., Chair

I am privileged to serve as the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Meharry Medical College. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has the mission of providing excellent comprehensive women’s health care with compassion. Three primary components of our department are excellence, enthusiasm and energy, all focused on improving women’s healthcare. We continuously strive to bring cutting-edge care, research and technology to women’s health through collaborative efforts with other departments and centers of excellence in our own institution as well as other national institutions. Our department’s main purpose is to include a strong women's health initiative that supports teaching, research and an expansion of patient care services.

The historical strength of Meharry powerfully positions us to provide education for African Americans and other minorities to serve future generations. Our curriculum is designed to educate medical students and residents in the most comprehensive women's healthcare environment. Through residency training, we promote the development of competent, compassionate caregivers who will be professionally astute, competitive and capable of providing healthcare to diverse populations.

We are committed to inspire others and touch many lives, and to build on a foundation already laid by our predecessors. Our ultimate goal is to be the national model for comprehensive, integrated, multi-disciplinary approaches to women’s health care, especially for women of color.
