PEDI501. Pediatric Clerkship.

Blackboard LogoThis eight-week course is taken in the third year of medical school after completion of the basic sciences courses, and it is one of the core clinical clerkships. The Pediatric Clerkship will emphasize general Pediatric knowledge and skills that are required by all physicians.  It will provide a foundation for those who decide to go into the field of Pediatrics.
 
This course addresses (1) issues unique to infancy, childhood and adolescence and (2) the impact of the family and community on child health and well being.  Emphasis is placed on promotion of normal growth and development, preventive care and health maintenance, and prompt and early treatment of the acutely ill child.
 
The goals of the Pediatric Clerkship include:
  • .Understanding the pattern of growth and development from newborn through adolescence.
  • .Acquisition of the clinical skills and competence necessary for proper physical examination of infants, children, and adolescents.
  • .Ability to provide preventive care and adequate health maintenance.
  • .Acquisition of the knowledge necessary for the diagnosis and management of common childhood illnesses.
