A Message from the Chairman
Thank you for choosing Meharry Medical College Department of Psychiatry as the launch pad for your career as a psychiatrist. We at Meharry are interested in fostering a diverse psychiatric education, training, research and clinical service program. Historically we have been focused on clinical service of the underserved with primary focus on chemical dependency laden elements. As we have grown,
we have diversified to primary affective illness, treating patients with diagnoses such as major depressive disorder and bipolar affective disorder. In addition we are increasingly enhancing our effort in taking care of patients who also have primary psychotic disorders, those with diagnoses such as Schizophrenia, Schizophreniform disorder and Psychotic Disorder Not Otherwise Specified.
We have come to realize that we have developed a very strong program with a focus on patients with dual diagnoses. Patients with a psychiatric disorder and concomitant substance use disorder are a mainstay among our treatment groups. This duality presents a great opportunity for learning on a case by case basis as each of these patients may have medical issues that need to be addressed along with their chemical dependence and psychiatric illnesses. These patients may tend to have problems with accessing care and following up with care over time thereby presenting a challenge for the budding psychiatrist, motivating them to excel.
We have worked to develop a greater research basis over the past three years. We have increased the number of peer-review journal articles being published. I currently serve as the Editor in Chief for a new online psychiatric academic
journal called Frontiers in Psychiatry. In addition we have grown our routine academic portfolio to include a Grand Rounds activity with outside speakers which is held on Tuesdays at noon, followed by a full array of didactics and lectures for
residents, students and other trainees addressing basic psychiatric academic themes.
Our clinical repertoire has primarily focused on VA Murfeesboro TN at their York campus. We are branching out. We currently have a contract with Nashville General Metro inner city county hospital to conduct Psychiatric Consultation both in
ER and on the floor. We are developing a relationship with Centennial Hospital to conduct Psychiatric Consultations in their ER in addition to the existing relationship with their Parthenon Pavilion inpatient unit.
This is an exciting time for Psychiatry as a specialty. With the advent of new research modalities and neuroimaging techniques abound. The brain and mind become less and less of a mystery with each passing day. At Meharry Medical College, it is our privilege to usher in a new generation of competent, diligent and compassionate psychiatrists.
