Dr. Rahn Bailey

Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Meharry Medical College. I am very pleased that you are interested in learning more about our department and our 4-year residency training program which is fully-accredited by the Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

This is a very exciting time in psychiatry. With the recognition and acceptance of mental illness as a malfunction of the brain, the intricate relationship between the brain and physical and mental health is finally becoming understood. The application of new methods and technologies for psychiatric diagnosis such as neuroimaging coupled with new therapeutic agents and modalities will elevate the rigor and effectiveness of psychiatric medicine.

Our department strives to provide the highest level of patient care, innovative educational programs, active research in mental illness, and advocacy throughout the state of Tennessee and beyond. We are comprised of a skilled group of faculty, staff, residents, medical students, physician externs, and psychology interns. Our department’s comprehensive, broad-based, full-service programoperates under the philosophy that in order to prepare individuals with mental health issues to live free lives all aspects of their lives must be addressed. From this philosophy stems a holistic approach to treatment that incorporates a multi-disciplinary treatment team model in planning, delivering, and improving the services provided.

Meharry is an academic health sciences center that exists to improve the health and health care of minority and underserved communities by offering excellent education and training programs in the health sciences. Our standards are high within an educational environment that is nurturing, best exemplified by our motto: "Worship of God through Service to Mankind."

Whether you are looking at this site for descriptions of our educational and post-graduate training programs, current research, information about finding a physician, or information about contacting our clinical and forensics services professionals, I welcome you to the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Meharry.
