Psychiatry Externship Program

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Meharry Medical College welcomes your interest in our psychiatry externship program. Externs at Meharry are volunteers; thus the department does not offer any financial compensation or benefits to doctors during the externship period. Externs function under the direct supervision of the Externship Director, Dr. William D. Richie, and are involved in forensic psychiatric case-development, document review, and bench sciences investigational activities (as available). They may also collaborate with faculty and the residents on research, grant writing, or the writing of peer-reviewed journal articles. Additionally, externs participate in departmental grand rounds and weekly didactic lectures with the Meharry Psychiatry residents.

During the four-week externship externs are expected to volunteer full-time Mondays through Fridays (8 a.m.-5:00 p.m.). The Meharry Externship Program seeks applicants who are professional, mature, psychologically-minded, and culturally-competent.  Applicants must have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and excellent comprehension of the English language. Applicants must have graduated from medical school and have passed USMLE step I, II CK and II CS.

Applications are reviewed in the order in which they are received. Selected applicants will be contacted by the Externship Director for further query. Please note that due to the high volume of applications, we are unable to return phone or email inquiries about the status of your externship application.
