Consistent with the college’s mission, the Department of Internal Medicine at Meharry Medical College exists:

  • To provide culturally sensitive and highly competent medical care to our patient population, especially in underserved communities of the Nashville area;
  • To provide high quality efficient, effective, and personalized state-of the-art medical care;
  • To provide outstanding clinical educational opportunities for medical students, graduate students, residents, post-doctoral fellows, our colleagues, and ourselves; and
  • To discover and apply new knowledge through our participation in biomedical and patient oriented research.

In pursuing our mission, we will emphasize open, honest communication, and ethical behavior recognizing that we are privileged to provide leadership in, medical care, medical education, and biomedical research.

We understand that the ultimate objective of our collective efforts is to improve the health of our patients, and to promote an educational environment that develops highly qualified culturally sensitive physicians committed to eliminating health disparities.

We propose to integrate our patient care, medical education, and biomedical research to build synergic relationships so that each enhanced by the presence of the other.

We work in partnership with other departments of the School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, School of Graduate Studies, local and regional health related educational institutions, as well as community leaders to meet the health care and educational needs of the Nashville region.

We aspire to be leaders in defining the role of internal medicine in these changing times.
