HISTORY OF THE MEHARRY DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE

Since 1950, there have been ninetween Chairs of the Department of Medicine. We are fortunate that two Chairman remain active faculty within the Department.

 

 

Marquetta L. Faulkner, M.D., MBA, FACP, FASN

Joy McCann Professor of Medicine

Nephrology & Hypertension

Dr. Marquetta L. Faulkner served as interim chair for the Meharry Department of Medicine from 2008-2011. Under her leadership clinical practice revenues increased, research funding from NIH increased, and the department's faculty increased. Dr. Faulkner received the Primary Care Residency Expansion Grant (PCRE) HRSA funded in 2010, which, allowed the expansion of the Medicine residency program from 36 to 45 residents per academic year. In 2010, she received the Joy McCann Endowed Professorship award for her outstanding leadership as a woman in academic medicine. In 2011, Dr. Faulkner was appointed to Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine, Assistant Chief of Service at Nashville General Hospital and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education & Designated Institutional Official (DIO) at Meharry Medical College.

 

 

Steven N. Wolff, M.D., FACP

Professor of Medicine

Hematology &  Medical Oncology

Dr. Steven N. Wolff chaired the Meharry Department of Medicine from 2005 to 2008. During that time, research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) quadrupled in the department and the faculty doubled. Dr. Wolff continues NIH-funded research in the division of Hematology & Medical Oncology, a division in the Department of Internal Medicine. He currently serves as the Director of the Meharry Sickle Cell Center, Minority Based Clinical Oncology Program, Hematology & Medical Oncology fellowship Program and the Clinical Research Education and Career Development program, which awards a Masters of Science in Clinical Investitgation.
