The Department of Internal Medicine of Meharry Medical College performs clinical care, provides medical education and promotes research performed in a scholarly and compassionate manner. The Department operates to overcome the disparities of health care with particular concern for those who are medically underserved to assure that all patients are provided the highest standards of care. Educational concepts emphasized by the Department are scholarship, independent learning, inquisitiveness in order for all trainees to maintain the highest quality of knowledge and skills in internal medicine. The Department also maintains a large portfolio of research to further improve medical knowledge and care for our patients. Overall, the Department emphasizes compassion, dedication to service and scholarship in all of it endeavors.
To develop general internists who are competent and empathetic toward patients, and ethical and professional in the way they conduct their professional lives. To instill an attitude of scholarship, independence and self-learning as a life-long process among all residents.
