Computer Operations

The Help Desk provides support to users for computer issues, and configures and installs new computer equipment. The Telecommunications staff administers the telephone and data networks, installs network equipment, and troubleshoots network problems. Network Administration installs, configures and maintains network servers and administers the e-mail system and Internet services.

The Telecommunication department is responsible for installation and maintenance of the telephone and data networks on campus and at two remote clinics.

The Network Services staff installs, maintains and upgrades all network servers on campus, most of which are located in the Computer Center. This staff also is responsible for installation, maintenance and upgrades for the College's Internet connections.

Services

Install new computer equipment

The Help Desk staff receives newly delivered computers at the Central Receiving department; the equipment is configured to Meharry's standard desktop and any additional software is installed as necessary. After delivery to the intended recipient, the computer, plus any additional peripheral equipment, is installed at the user location.

Maintain existing computer equipment

The Help Desk staff receives trouble reports from users via telephone or web interface. Service tickets are generated and distributed to technicians for troubleshooting and repair. Repairs are usually accomplished at the users' locations. If the equipment is still under warranty the Help Desk will work with vendors to obtain service.

Install and upgrade campus telephone system

The Telecommunications staff installs telephone equipment on the new VOIP telephone system. This also requires upgrading data network equipment to handle the new phones.

Maintain campus telephone system

The Telecommunications staff works with an outside contractor to keep the new VOIP telephone system operational.

Install and upgrade campus data network

The Telecommunications staff installs new network equipment as needed, and coordinates the installation of new network drops.

Install and maintain videoconferencing

The Telecommunications staff installs and maintains videoconferencing equipment on campus.

Install, upgrade, and maintain network servers

The network services staff is responsible for specifying, ordering, configuring and installing new network servers. The network services staff maintains, troubleshoots and upgrades existing servers.

Install, upgrade, and maintain Internet services

The network services staff installs, monitors, and optimizes Meharry's Internet services. This includes blocking access to inappropriate web sites, blocking inappropriate file transfers, and filtering spam e-mail messages.

Install, upgrade, and maintain the E-mail system

The network services staff installs, monitors, and optimizes Meharry's E-mail services.
