News from the Office of Safety and Security at Meharry Medical College

Internet/Computer Safety

By Lt. Theresa McKinnon
Professional Accountability Unit

Safety is a concern everywhere in society and Meharry Medical College is no exception.  There are many ways topromotesecurity and void unsafe situations.  The Department of Public Safety and Security is committed to providing a safeenvironment for it’s students, faculty, staff, and visitors of this campus.

Weat the Department of Public Safety and Security are also concerned about your safety on the internet.  The internet can be used to conduct research for an upcoming assignment, make purchases, pay bills, or a place to have fun and surf.  However, there are those individuals out there that may wish to do harm to you or your child.  Unfortunately, when it comes to internet safety you control whether you will become a victim.

Never give out identifying information in a public message such as in a chat room or on a bulletin board.  If you are making purchases on-line be care about providing your checking account number and credit card number.  Be sure to learn how it will be protected before you share your account information.

“Parents” make sure you know what sites your children are visiting.  Think about using a program to limit access to certain sites.  We tell

Our children not to talk to strangers but we also need to be aware of the dangers lurking in the electronic world.  Parents unknowingly invite criminals into their home with internet access.  Without proper supervision on the internet children could become victimized by people who parents would never allow in their home in the first place.  There is also the potential for children to become involved in illegal activity.

Remember, there is always a potential for danger on-line.

Tips for Internet Safety

      • Don’t respond to anyone who leaves you obnoxious, sexual, or menacing e-mail.
      • Report all electronic harassment and/or abuse to your internet provider.
      • Be careful when someone offers your something for nothing.
      • Place your computer in a room where you are able to see the screen while your child in on the computer.
      • Talk to your kids about computer/online dangers

Crime Prevention Tip: Vehicles Crimes

Crimes against motor vehicles include Motor Vehicle Theft, Theft from Motor Vehicle, and Vandalism to Motor Vehicle.  In the United States a vehicle is stolen every 20 seconds. Some car owners are so proud of their ground shaking car stereos they even advertise the stereo manufacturer's name on banners across the windshield or rear window.  Might as well hang a sign on the car saying, "Expensive stereo within, please steal me!, this is a good car to rip-off.
