Personnel and Staffing
The staffing in the Department of Public Safety and Security consists of the following:
1 - Director
1 - Captain
3 - Lieutenants
3 - Shift Commanders
4 – Sergeants
3 - Shift Supervisors
1 - Key Control/Card Access Manager
All supervisors are armed
14 - Armed Officers
2 - Unarmed Officers
4 - Vacant Officer Positions
Uniform employees are licensed through the State of Tennessee.
Officers must attend training class for armed security guards and unarmed security guards before they are eligible for licensing.

The department operates 24 hours a day – 7 days a week, which is comprised of three shifts.
Responsibilities
The department is responsible for the following:
A. Campus Patrol (Presently have two marked and one unmarked unit, and 3 Golf Carts)
- Mobile Patrol (mandatory for each shift)
- Foot Patrol (one mandatory for
B. Transportation for special events
C. Access Control to Buildings
D. Enforce Parking Regulations
E. Issuance of Parking Permits and Decals
F. Investigate Crimes/Complaints/Follow-up Investigations
G. Report Campus Crimes to:
- Tennessee Bureau of Investigations Statistical Crime Unit
- United States Department of Education (USDE)
- Metropolitan Nashville Police Department
Other Responsibilities
- Provide security for special events on the Meharry Campus.
- Provide security for off-campus events (Commencement exercise, Board of Trustee meetings and others).
- Provide escort services for students, faculty, and staff during night time upon request.
- Patrol Meharry Campus and off-Campus (buildings, surface lots, and garages) by foot, golf carts and mobile vehicles.
Off-Campus locations:
(1) 1919 Charlotte Avenue – Several medical offices consisting of Meharry employees are located in this building with normal work hours of 6am to 6pm.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department is the primary provider of basic patrol duty at this location. Meharry’s Department of Public Safety and Security provides secondary coverage of mobile patrol.
(2) Herman Street Apartments located at 1601 Herman Street. These apartments are the property of Meharry Medical College and provide residence for those students who elect to take advantage of this location. The public can rent units at this location provided space is available.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department is the primary provider of basic patrol duty at this location. Meharry’s Department of Public Safety and Security provides secondary coverage of mobile patrol.
(3) Apartments @ 201 and 203 Tree Line Road Oak Grove, Kentucky. These apartment units owned by Meharry Medical College provide Meharry Interns housing while serving at the U.S. Army Hospital at Fort Campbell, Ky.
The Oak Grove, Kentucky Police Department and the local Sheriff ’s Department are the primary providers of basic patrol duty at this location. |
