45 Year Honoree
As a professor in biochemistry and cancer biology in the School of Medicine, Dr. Salil K.Das came to Meharry looking for a challenge. “I met Dr. Edward G. Hie in 1969 who was, at the time, the chairman of biochemistry at Meharry,” Das said. “He impressed me with his dreams and I decided I wanted to be a part of those dreams.”
Born in Rangoon Burma, India, Dr. Das graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with his Doctor of Science degree. He did his postdoctoral training at the University of Arizona, the University of Arkansas and Duke University
He said he has seen many changes during his years at Meharry including a lot of diversified projects and faculty expansion. However, while Dr. Das has been the principal investigator of 34 grants for his department, there is still ample need for more grants along with endowments. “I would like to see more research being conducted … I would like to see more philanthropists give to Meharry in the name of research.”
Dr. Das’ specialties are in the areas of breast cancer and airway disease and the role of environment and diet in the molecular mechanisms of both of these pathologies. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
“It seems like I just got here yesterday,” said Das. “I really try to live day by day and I don’t feel like I’m getting older.” Dr. Das enjoys teaching and says Meharry has “wonderful, quality, respectful” students. He said he is not thinking about retirement because he has “a lot more to contribute.”
