State Awards Meharry Medical College $750,000 Grant for Program that Helps

Reduce Infant Mortality

(Nashville, Tenn.) ---(September 8, 2009) -- Meharry Medical College has received a $750,000 grant from the Governor’s Office of Children’s Care Coordination for a new model for prenatal care called CenteringPregnancy® which is designed to help reduce infant mortality in the state of Tennessee.

Cancer Project Enhances Minority Participation in Clinical Trials

Nashville, Tenn. – African-Americans are more likely to be diagnosed with certain forms of cancer and are far more likely to die of the disease. But, they also are less likely to enroll in cancer clinical trials, with African-Americans accounting for just 2.5 percent of participants nationwide.

Meharry Medical College awarded historic multimillion-dollar endowment to establish national center for health policy
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to announce groundbreaking collaboration  

(Nashville, Tenn.) March 2, 2009-- Meharry Medical College, the nation’s largest, private, independent, historically black, academic health center, is poised to receive the single largest endowment gift in the college’s 130-year history. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the largest philanthropy in America devoted exclusively to health and health care, has selected Meharry to receive a multimillion-dollar endowment and other funding to establish the Robert Wood Johnson Center for Health Policy at Meharry Medical College. The gift comes as the nation grapples with economic challenges amid new calls and rising momentum for reforming the U.S. health care system.

Meharry Medical College’s Center for Women’s Health Research Examines Gene Therapy to Treat Uterine Fibroids Study Published in “Fertility and Sterility”

(Nashville, Tenn.) – In an article published in the January issue of the specialized journal “Fertility and Sterility”, the official Journal of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, Meharry Medical College gynecologist Ayman Al-Hendy details his research using gene therapy to treat uterine fibroids, a condition that is four times more prevalent in African American women than in women from other ethnic groups.
