The Student National Dental Association (SNDA) of Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry, in conjunction with Delta Dental of Tennessee, will break new ground with Nashville’s first annual Oral Cancer Walk on April 12, 2008. We invite you to be a sponsor of the event by providing much-needed financial support to enable us to raise awareness of a disease that kills more Americans annually than melanoma or cervical cancer. Sponsors’ logos will be prominently displayed on all promotional materials, including T-shirts, posters, banners, and on the SNDA oral cancer information web site. We anticipate that the walk will attract upwards of 500 people, all of whom will be wearing t-shirts with your logo on them.
Oral cancer is the ninth most common cancer in men. According to the National Cancer Institute approximately 34,360 new cases of oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers were diagnosed in 2007 in the U.S. and 7,550 people died. Seventy-five percent of oral and pharyngeal cancers are attributed to tobacco and heavy alcohol use. Less than 60 percent of patients will survive five years, and only 40 percent will survive in 10 years. This disease disproportionately affects African-American men, who have the highest rates of oral cancer in the U.S., but the good news is that early detection significantly reduces the risk of death.
The Oral Cancer Walk will send the critically important message of early detection and prevention not only to the general public, but also to our fellow dental students across the nation the future front-line specialists in screening for and detecting this disease at its earliest, most curable stages. A portion of the proceeds will go to The Oral Cancer Foundation while the remaining funds will help assist Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry patients afford oral cancer biopsies and treatment.
