Meharry Medical College Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology will celebrate the 20th Annual W.F. B. James Symposium on April 3 – 5, 2008. For the past 20 years the department has sponsored this educational event that focuses on healthcare issues for the female patient.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Kenneth Edelin, renowned author of Broken Justice: A True Story of Race, Sex and Revenge in a Boston Courtroom. Proceeds from this event will support the educational needs of the Residency Training Program at Meharry via the Henry W. Foster, MD Educational Initiative.

State Farm Insurance and the Meharry Medical College Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology present the first Henry W. Foster, MD Golf Tournament. Dr. Foster is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Meharry Medical College, Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and past Chair of the U.S. Committee for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). From 1996-2001, he served as Senior Advisor to President Clinton on Teen Pregnancy Reduction and Youth Issues.

Proceeds from both the dinner and golf tournament will support the Henry W. Foster, MD Educational Initiative that supports resident education. The Ob/Gyn Residency Program was reestablished in 2004 under the direction of then chair, Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, now Dean of the School of Medicine and Senior Vice President of Health Affairs for Meharry Medical College. The program will graduate its first three residents in June 2008.
