Department of Surgery


The Department of Surgery has a long tradition of excellence being shepherded by giants of American surgery throughout the last century. The primary teaching hospital for the Department is Nashville General Hospital at Meharry , located on the Meharry Medical College campus. Through the Meharry/Vanderbilt Alliance, Nashville General Hospital serves as an affiliate reigning site for several Vanderbilt University surgical residency programs under the direction of Meharry faculty. Meharry medical students also receive clerkship training at the Alvin C. York Veterans Administration Medical Center in Murfreesboro, the Blanchfield Community Army Hospital in Clarksville, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee .

The Meharry Department of Surgery is committed to providing high quality patient care, while training medical students and residents in the art and science of surgery, and developing research programs in cancer, health services research and student education.

The Department is organized into the divisions of: Anesthesiology, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Otolaryngology-Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Urology and Research.
