How to Dispose of Radioactive Waste

The Radiation Safety Office will dispose of radioactive waste from your laboratory.  Follow this procedure:

  1. Segregate the waste  by half life as shown below

  1. Segregate the waste again by type as shown below

CS      Combustible Solids e.g. paper, plastics
NS      Noncombustible Solids, e.g. metal, glass
SL      Liquids
SV      Liquid Scintillation Vials
HL      Mixed Waste, e.g. solid chemical reagents that are also radioactive
PT      Pathological Waste, e.g., radioactive animal tissues

  1. Complete a separate Radioactive Waste Log Sheet for each container.
  2.  Attach the Waste Log sheets to the containers
  3. E-mail or fax or a Radioactive Waste Pickup Request to the Radiation Safety Office (6648).
