The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that to date; |
- 1,039,000 to 1,185,000 people in the US are living with HIV/AIDS
- about 40,000 people in the US are infected with HIV each year
- ¼ of the people infected do not know it
- Half of all new infections are among African Americans
- 40% of all infections since the onset of the epidemic have been among African Americans
- 38% of the half-million AIDS deaths have been African Americans
- 68% of female HIV infections are among African American women
- Over ¾ of HIV positive African American women were infected through heterosexual contact
- 44% of male HIV infections are among African American men
- Just over half of HIV positive African American men were infected through male-male sexual contact
