Mission and History of the MBRS SCORE Program
The Support for Continuous Research Excellence Program (SCORE) program is funded
by the Minority Opportunities in Research (MORE) Division of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) at NIH. The long range goal of the SCORE program is to increase the research competitiveness of investigators at minority serving institutions.
Meharry Medical College was awarded one of the first 38 Minority Schools Biomedical Support (MBS) Programs in 1972. NIGMS later changed the name of the overall program to Minority Biomedical Support and finally to Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS) program to reflect changing program eligibility and scope.
Today, the Meharry Medical College MBRS Program has been funded continuously for 35 years ( S06 GM08037-035) and supports both basic and clinical science investigators focusing on a broad spectrum of health related issues including cancer, vascular biology, infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS and neuroscience.
