News from the Office of Safety and Security at Meharry Medical College

WELCOME STUDENTS

Follow these simple tips to maintain safety

By Lt. Theresa McKinnon
Professional Accountability Unit

The department of Public Safety and Security is excited about the 2005-2006 school year!  We hope everyone
enjoyed time for vacations
and relaxation.

Meharry Medical College has a rich legacy in preparing students for the challenges and rewards of careers in the health sciences since 1876.

The location of the college is in the heart of the city and provides many opportunities for students to complement their academic experience with exposure to the arts, history, athletics and diverse cultures.

With all that Nashville has to offer, it is sometimes easy to forget that Nashville is a major city.  Vigilance and preparedness are crucial to maintaining one’s personal safety and the security of one’s property.

The Department of Public Safety and Security at Meharry Medical College is here to maintain our institution as a safe, secure and comfort able place in which to study, live, and work.  We must all work together and actively participate in the process of achieving  a truly safe environment.

Crime prevention requires the cooperation of faculty, staff, students and visitors in order to be effective. For example, students can assist in the crime prevention effort by acting as eyes and ears for the security department.

Students are given information about security during orientation sessions, and this information is an integral part of the orientation process. Parking rules and regulations, statistics, crime prevention tips and general topics are provided to heighten the awareness of entering students and refresh the awareness of returning students.
Broken locks, safety hazards, and especially people who seem “out of place” should be brought to the immediate attention of Public Safety and Security staff as soon as they are discovered. In fact, students are encouraged to report anything at all which seems out of the ordinary. A Department of Public Safety and Security officer will respond to investigate and provide assistance in rectifying the situation.

Remember, it is more beneficial to prevent crimes than
to react to them after the fact. The Department of
Public Safety and Security believes that an informed campus is a more safety
conscious campus.

Once again, we would like to say “welcome” to the entering and returning students.  We look forward to the year ahead and wish everyone a safe school year.

PARKING GARAGE TIPS
Utilizing a parking garage is often a necessity on campus.  If you see someone loitering around your vehicle, you may walk past or call for assistance if you feel threatened.  Following these safety techniques could be your best defense:
  • Keep your doors locked and your windows shut.
  • Look around your   vehicle for suspicious activity.
  • Do not park close to a van with a sliding door.
  • Change from high heels to flats or sneakers to make running, if necessary, easier.
  • Approach your vehicle with your keys in your hand.
  • Do a quick scan of your vehicle’s interior before unlocking the door.  Be sure to look in the back seat.
  • At night, leave your office, dorm or building in the company of others. Don’t leave alone after dark. Call security for a escort to your vehicle.
