By Chief Richard Briggance
Director of Public Safety and Security

The Department of Public Safety and Security invites faculty, staff and students of Meharry Medical College to join with us as we congratulate Lt. Theresa McKinnon, our first graduate of the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training course (P.O.S.T.).
P.O.S.T. is the training curriculum that is mandatory for all Tennessee law enforcement officers to receive certification as a police officer in the state.
Lt. McKinnon successfully completed the intensive 10- week training session at the Cleveland State Community College Law Enforcement Training Academy located in Cleveland, Tenn. She began her training on Oct. 3 and graduated on Dec. 9.
The course included 14 general instructional areas and 67 individual topical areas including community policing, basic law (constitutional issues for police, affidavits, search warrants, reasonable/probable cause, among other topics) and other codes of law in the Tennessee Code Annotated.
She received specialized certification in the areas of DWI, standardized field sobriety tests, intoximeter EC-IR II operation, pressure point control tactics and defensive Tactics. She also successfully participated in one week of firearms training at the military base in Catossa, Ga.
Other aspects of her training included successful completion of day and night stress, combat and NRA tactical handgun training with the Glock .40 caliber handgun, resulting in a score of 99 out of 100 on the P.O.S.T. shooting test.
Lt. McKinnon also was required to tactically load and accurately shoot a 12-gauge shotgun as well as the AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle.
The course consisted of mandatory physical conditioning which involved agility, flexibility, endurance, daily strength activities, distance running (two miles) and a timed physical fitness obstacle course.
As a result of this high- caliber training course Lt. McKinnon has received advanced fundamental police knowledge, skills and ability and has met the requirements set forth by The Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission which ensures the citizens of Tennessee and the Meharry Medical College community that they are protected and served by officers that are capable, well prepared and confident.
Her hard work and dedication are exemplary, and members of Meharry’s Department of Public Safety and Security are very proud of her accomplishment. Please join us in expressing our congratulations and appreciation to Lt. McKinnon on a job well done. Her efforts have added greatly to enhancing the professionalism and abilities of the Meharry Department of Public Safety and Security.

Holiday Decoration Storage Safety Tips

Now that the holidays are over, check your decorations and dispose of any electrical items that are showing wear. Worn out electrical plugs and cords should be replaced.
Pack your decorations carefully and store them in a cool dry place. Storing decorations in hot attics or storerooms could cause electrical components to develop problems that could create sparks or fire when turned on next year. All decorations should be stored a safe distance from sources of heat, such as chimneys, furnaces, compressors, motors and light fixtures.
Check if your decorations are flame resistant or flame retardant; if they are not, now is a good time to take advantage of after-holiday sales promotions to replace them.
