History American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) was founded in 1921 in order to aid the advancement of women in dentistry and to promote professional support and cooperation among its members. The founding members never intended AAWD to foster separation of women from men, nor did they wish to cause fragmentation in the profession. They wanted a support organization to share their common intrests and to enjoy friendships and comaradrie. Today, the organization continues to pursue the goals of its founders by seeking to mentor and support women dentists professionally, academically and personally. It is the only nationally recognized association which speaks for women dentist.
AAWD-Meharry student chapter was founded in 2000 by 15 female dental students under the guidance of faculty founders Dr. Yolanda Anthony-West, Dr Charea Farmer-Dixon, Dr. Daphne Ferguson-Young and Dr. Valencia Hereford. The 15 charter members were student doctors Nicole Bell, Kimberly L. Caldwell, Erica Denley, Cristi Fletcher, Natarica Franklin, Carmen Hopkins, Tawana Lee, Tu-Wanda Marable, Ericka McCoy, Heather Moman, Erika Smith, Shanetta Sutton, Tracye Taylor, Kimberly Townes and Ragonva Walls. Our chapter, one of AAWD's largest student chapters, has a history of dedicated involvement.
