History PHR is a National Organization, started in 1986, with the goal to promote human rights and humanitarian ethics & treatment worldwide. "Physicians for Human Rights members, student chapters and volunteers work to promote change in a wide range of areas, from banning landmines and "blood diamonds" to protecting the rights of women [.] and working to end the global AIDS pandemic." "As one of the original steering committee members of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, PHR shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize. PHR currently serves as coordinator of the US Campaign to Ban Landmines." - www.phrusa.org
Mission Statement "The mission of Physicians for Human Rights is to promote health by protecting human rights. PHR believes that human rights are essential preconditions for the health and well-being of all family members."(www.phrusa.org) Amongst its goals, PHR strives to "educate health professionals and medical and public health students and organize them to become active in supporting a movement for human rights and creating a culture of human rights in the medical and scientific professions." Amongst its achievements, PHR has been responsible for helping "create the first health and human rights curricula for medical & public health schools and lead the effort to assure unimpeded access to health care during conflicts" and "protect neutrality of health workers, hospitals, and clinics." Our chapter's goal is to educate and raise awareness to fellow students concerning issues of human rights that affect them, their future patients, and their communities.
